ACRE congratulates the Independence Party on forming a new Icelandic government

The Alliance of Conservatives and Reformists in Europe (ACRE) congratulates its member, the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn), on leading the formation of a new Centre-Right government under new Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson in Iceland.

ACRE President Jan Zahradil MEP said:

Our member, the Independence Party, has long been a major force in Icelandic politics. Its conservative, classical liberal and euro-realist values chime with those of the Icelandic people; ensuring its place in government for 30 of the last 34 years.

We are sure they will continue their great work in this new government, and we wish them all the best. Congratulations!

ACRE board member Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson will be the Icelandic Minister of Foreign Affairs. Former mayor Kristján Þór Júlíusson is the new Minister of Education, Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð the Minister for Tourism, Industry and Innovation and youngest Minister, the former industrial affairs committee vicechairman Jón Gunnarsson is the Minister of Transportation, Regional Development and Municipal Affairs. The prominent Icelandic parliamentarian Sigríður Andersen, an active advocate of more transparency in environmental affairs, is Minister of Justice.

The Independence Party is by far the largest parliamentary party (one third of the seats in the Althing) with the largest party membership (15 % of the population) in Iceland. It joined ACRE in November 2011.
