The European Conservatives and Reformists Party strongly condemns the introduction of new measures would seek to ban ‘treason, secession, sedition and subversion’ that will undermine the legal autonomy of Hong Kong as recognised under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle enshrined in the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984. Such measures would undoubtably be used for political purposes.
The introduction of these new security measures – that were voted on last night by the National Peoples Congress in Beijing – are in direct breach of international law. The Sino-British Joint Declaration (1984) established the principle of ‘One Country, Two Systems’ which stated that Hong Kong would be autonomous until 2047. The new measures are directly imposed on Hong Kong and supersede any laws passed by the Hong Kong Legislative Council.
The ECR Party strongly condemns the authoritarian actions of the Chinese Communist Party and calls on the Peoples Republic of China to follow its international obligations. We also call on the European Commission to follow the lead of the United States and introduce sanctions.
