ECR Party expresses serious concerns on the imprisonment of Former President of the Maldives, Abdulla Yameen
The European Conservatives and Reformists Party strongly condemns the continued imprisonment of former President of the Maldives Abdulla Yameen. President Yameen has been held by the government of the Maldives since he lost his bid for re-election in September 2018. President Yammen peacefully handed over power following the election.
President Yameen’s trial was held in un-transparent and irregular circumstances – including the case taking place in front of only one judge as opposed to three in most high profile cases. Currently, there is no sitting Chief Justice or a Prosecutor General holding office and ahead of the trial, the Maldives government has removed from office four justices of the Supreme Court. The trial itself was considered heavily politicised by the government in a way that demonstrates a lack of independence in the ruling.
The European Conservatives and Reformists Party expresses strong concerns about the process that led to the imprisonment of former President Yemeen and calls on the European Union to investigate this erosion of the rule of law and the universal human rights within the country – as well as the wider independence of the criminal justice system in the Maldives.
