Carlo Fidanza MEP, leader of the Fratelli d'Italia delegation in the European Parliament, expresses his concern at the recent investigation into opposition leader Gagik Tsarukian in Armenia.
On 16th of June the governing majority party in the Armenian Parliament voted to strip Prosperous Armenia’s leader Gagik Tsarukian of his parliamentary immunity after he criticised the government’s handling of the ongoing Coronavirus crisis. Opposition parties did not take part in the vote.
Shortly after stripping him of his National Security Services forces raided the offices of the Prosperous Armenia Party and the private home of Mr Tsarukian. Protestors in support of Prosperous Armenia were detained outside the Parliament building for gathering.
Carlo Fidanza said: “The actions of Prime Minister Pashinyan and his government risk undermining all the progress made towards becoming a more stable democracy and undermining everything that the revolution stood for two years ago. A vibrant democracy needs to have a strong opposition that can voice its concerns without fear of being reprimanded.
