The European Conservatives and Reformists Party has today launched its new 'Speak Up For Uyghurs' Campaign - calling on the European Commission to take urgent action to support the Uyghur minority living in Xinjiang Austonomous Region in China.
The Communist Party in China is currently launching a full assault on the liberties of the people living in Xinjiang - with as many as 2 million ethnic Uyghurs currently being held in internment camps across the region. Whilst those who are not in internment camps are under constant surveillance and face daily harrasment from the Chinese Communist Party.
ECR Party Vice President Anna Fotyga MEP is leading the campaign - with an open letter to High Representative Josep Borrell calling for the European Commission to look into introducing targeted sanctions against the Communist Regime in China, following the example set by the United States in their passage of the 'Uyghur Human Rights Act'. Last year the ECR Group in the European Parliament backed the giving of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Uyghur dissident Ilham Tohti.
