The European Conservatives and Reformists Party strongly condemns the proposed imposition of new national security laws in Hong Kong that undermines the internationally recognised autonomy of the city state. The introduction of new measures would seek to ban ‘treason, secession, sedition and subversion’ undermining the legal autonomy Hong Kong as recognised under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle enshrined in the Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984. Such measures would undoubtably be used for political purposes.
The imposition of these new measures comes on the back of the Chinese Communist Party having already violently clamped down on protests throughout 2019 against the introduction of an extradition bill that would have equally undermined the judicial system of Hong Kong. As well as the arrests and disappearances of a number of high profile pro-democracy activists.
The ECR Party strongly condemns the authoritarian actions of the Chinese Communist Party and calls on the Peoples Republic of China to follow its international obligations. The ECR Party equally calls for the European External Action Service to take swift measures to introduce sanctions against the regime.
