The European Conservatives and Reformists Party expresses its deep concern over the actions of the socialist government in Albania in their sudden move to change the Constitution and electoral system without the consensus with the opposition, as it was agreed on January 14th in the document for the establishment of Political Council for electoral reform, supported by the European Union, the United States and United Kingdom.
The Socialists did refuse the request of the opposition to ask the expertise of ODHIR as it was agreed in January agreement for the disputes between both sides. The actions of the Socialist governing party risk derailing public confidence in the electoral system and undermining the rule of law.
The electoral changes are in direct violation of the 5th of June agreement signed between the government and opposition, undermining chances of the country beginning its EU accession negotiations.
Leader of the Albanian Republican Party, which is an ECR Party Member, Fatmir Mediu said: “By voting today to breach the EU, USA and UK brokered 5 June agreement with the opposition, the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama cast a dark shadow over next April‘s general election which should be free and fair. By doing so Rama clearly hinders Albania’s EU integration.
