The European Conservatives and Reformists Party welcomes the implementation of the ceasefire in Ukraine – following the decision taken on the 22nd of July by the Trilateral Contact Group. The ceasefire which started at midnight should temporarily put an end to hostilities between the Ukrainian military and Russian backed aggressors in Eastern Ukraine.
We hope that this ceasefire will open up a new opportunity for dialogue and reconciliation in the Donbas and put an end the long running conflict.
Russian driven aggression in the Donbas has so far cost the lives of more than 15,000 people since it first started in 2014. Attempts to end the conflict have encountered many hurdles in the past however the hope remains that this ceasefire will be a step towards ensuring respect for the internationally recognised sovereign territory of Ukraine – including the recognition that Crimea as an integral part under international law.
The ECR Party praises the OSCE and Ukrainian Government for their hard work in delivering this ceasefire. We hope that such a ceasefire will pave the way for future talks to restore full Ukrainian control over its internationally recognised territory including Crimea – that must be returned by Russia.
