The European Conservatives and Reformists Party expresses strong concern over the recent escalation in hostilities along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. The ECR Party joins its Member Party, The Popular Front for the Whole of Azerbaijan (PFPWA) in expressing its deep concern over the recent hostilities and violence. We stress the need for an immediate de-escalation and a resumption of peace talks.
On the 12th of July the Armenian armed forces attempted to violate the state border of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the support of heavy artillery from the direction of Tovuz region of Azerbaijan, as a result of which 4 Azerbaijani servicemen were killed and 5 wounded.
Since the start of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, more than 1 million Azerbaijanis became internally displaced persons, more than 25,000 people died during the military operations, and 50,000 people been wounded.
The ECR Party expresses its concern over this dangerous escalation and calls on both sides to disengage and re-open diplomatic talks.
ECR Party Vice President Anna Fotyga MEP Said: “I condemn in the strongest terms the recent border clash between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Further escalation is a severe threat to the lives of military servicemen and innocent civilians. I call on both sides to resume substantive negotiations & use of their mechanisms for direct communication within the established format led by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs. I fear that the tensions between two countries are designed to expand the area of intense mutual confrontations and also harm the Europe-Asia corridor and new strategic energy projects.”
