Award for the most successful conservative politician of our era

On 1 November 2016, ACRE presented the Edmund Burke Award to the Hon John Howard OM AC at the National Gallery in London, in recognition of a lifetime’s achievement.

Under John Howard’s leadership as Prime Minister from 1996 to 2007, Australia became one of the wealthiest and freest countries on the planet. He cut taxes, paid off debt, secured Australia’s borders, liberalised the economy, signed free trade accords across Asia, reformed industrial relations and placed his country squarely at the centre of the Anglosphere alliance.

ACRE Secretary-General Daniel Hannan MEP said:

John Howard is, by most definitions, the most successful conservative politician of our era. It’s not just that he won four elections to Margaret Thatcher’s three and Ronald Reagan’s two. It’s that he used his time in office to transform Australia, presiding over a higher rate of economic growth than that country had seen since the Gold Rush.

The laudation was held by Dr Jesse Norman MP, the UK Minister for Industry and Energy at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, whose book Edmund Burke: Politician, Philosopher, Prophet (2013) was listed for the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Political Book Awards and the George Orwell Prize.

Every year, ACRE gives the Edmund Burke Award to the politician, who has done the most to advance conservative principles globally. Last year’s winner was Senator Jim DeMint, a fierce warrior for limited government who now heads the Heritage Foundation in Washington DC.
