According to the US State Department – over 2 Million ethnic Uyghurs are currently being held in internment camps in Xinjiang Autonomous Region by the Chinese Communist Party. It’s time for the European Union to SPEAK UP FOR UYGHURS.
Over the last decade – the Chinese Communist Party has been treating Uyghur people with increased suspicion and hostility. This has resulted in an unprecedented erosion of Human Rights. Today – the Uyghur people are some of the most violently repressed in the world.
Under directives and laws passed by the Chinese Communist Party Uyghurs have seen their human rights violated in multiple ways. They are no longer allowed to marry in religious ceremonies, pray in places of worship or public, speak their own language, eat halal food, travel outside of the region, or assemble in groups larger than three.
2 Million Uyghurs in Internment Camps
At the same time the Chinese Communist Party has launched a campaign of mass surveillance against them – with every car being remotely tracked, cameras in place on every street corner, and loyal party members being moved into Uyghur buildings to keep an eye on them. Those who are seen as being disloyal to the state risk being taken to ‘re-education’ camps or having their children taken away from them.
What is happening in Xinjiang Autonomous Region is nothing more than a cultural genocide and it’s time for the European Union to Speak Up and do more. Last year the ECR Group in the European Parliament backed the giving of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Uyghur dissident Ilham Tohti. Since then the European Union has taken very little action in support of the Uyghur people.
Earlier this year ECR Party affiliates in America – the Republican Party – led Congress with cross party support in passing the ‘Uyghur Human Rights Act (2020)’ that saw the introduction of targeted sanctions against the Communist Regime in Beijing and Xinjiang. We are calling on the European Commission to follow the example of the United States.
5,000 Places of Worship Destroyed
The ECR Party demands that the European Commission take stronger action against the Communist Party and introduce targeted sanctions of their own against the regime in Beijing – especially aimed at those responsible for violations in Xinjiang. ECR Party Vice President Anna Fotyga MEP has issued an open letter for all MEPs and MPs to sign calling for new sanctions against the Communist Regime in China.
In order to raise awareness of this campaign we are distributing facemasks in the European Parliament and National Parliaments and encouraging our members to post on social media using #SpeakUpForUyghurs
